Changing the Windows XP Classic Logon Background Color

Changing Windows Classic Logon default Background color (Light blue) with any other color can become a very challenging task for anyone because Microsoft Windows XP doesn’t provide any option relating to this. However it is still possible with the help of some changes in Registry Editor. In this blog I will take you through some nice and easy steps which help you to do this in next few minutes. To get started, follow these easy steps :

  •      First click start, then select run. Type regedit in the box and ok.
  •  Once registry Editor dialog box opens, you will want to expand HKEY_USERS, .DEFAULT, Control Panel, and then Colors.

  •  Once you expanded the Color key, you will see a list of file in the right section. These all files are used in logon screen. The file which you need is called “Background” file. For modifying this file, all you need is the RGB code for your color which you want to apply. RGB means Red, green, blue. The numbers can range from 0 to 255. A RGB Value of “255 255 255” is white whereas “0 0 0” is black. Before attempting to modify the Background file, all you have to do is finding out the easy way to convert your selected color to the RGB color code. One of the easiest and best way to do this is MS Paint. Click start and then select ms paint. Double click the color palette which you like or if you don’t find any color of your choice then don’t worry. After double click on any color palette, a dialog box will open. You can select your color by clicking on Define Custom Colors. Once you select your color, the RGB for that color is displayed on the right section of the box.

  •        After taking the code, right click on “Background” file and select Modify.

  • Insert the new code in the “value data section” box. Make sure that all three numbers have space between them ( 192 192 192 ). Click ok when you are finished.

A restart is needed for settings to take place in Windows XP classic Logon. After rebooting the system you will see your new background color. If you ever want to revert your computer back to the default blue color, repeat the steps above to change the color and set the value of the background entry to “0 78 152”.

Changing to classic Logon Screen

Changing to classic Logon Screen from a new Welcome Screen has many benefits for some users. By shifting there self to classic Logon screen they increases there security level little bit. In classic Logon Screen, list of all of the user’s account are not displayed when a user turn on the computer. One good thing with classic Logon is, it provides the capability to log into domains ( windows network security servers ), whereas new Welcome Screen does not have this capability. But the good thing which Welcome Screen provides is its fast user switching means a user can switch between its two or more user accounts without logging out.

Shifting to classic Logon Screen

Before changing to Classic Logon Screen please make sure that you don’t need your new welcome Screen any more because after changing to that you are not able to switch between the user so rapidly. You have to properly logout from your Account before login in to any other User Account. Classic Logon Screen doesn’t provide this facility. According to records most Users never used this feature. So, changing it is not going to be a big deal for you.
  1.             Click Start menu and then Select Run. Then type nusrmgr.cpl and click OK.

2.    A User Account dialog box opens. Click Change The Way Users Log On or Off. Then uncheck both boxes.

3.          Click Apply and you are finished.

If ever you want to change the setting then check the boxes and click apply.

There are many things which we can do to Classic Logon Screen to make it better.
In my next blog I will teach you how to make it more effective.
